Symposium Tours

As part of the 2023 International Symposium on Sustainable Ironmaking and Cokemaking, the CIMR hosted two tours.
The tours were by inviation only and not part of the Symposium registration.
Both tours were held on Wednesday, February 8th following the Symposium conclusion.

Tour 1: BlueScope Steel Facilities in Wollongong

Tour of the BlueScope Steel blast furnace and coke oven facilities.

Tour Capacity = 20 people

Tour Program:

6:00am: Depart Newcastle from the Crystalbrook Kingsley Hotel 

10:00am: Arrive BlueScope Facilities Wollongong 

Site Tour:

  • 10:00am Site and Safety induction
  • 10:30 Cokemaking
  • 11:15 Sinter Plant
  • 12:00 Lunch at Mellor Centre
  • 12:45 #5 Blast Furnace
  • 1:45 Slabmaking
  • 2:45pm Return to BlueScope Visitor Centre

3:00pm: Depart BlueScope Facilities Wollongong 

7:00pm: Arrive Crystalbrook Kingsley Newcastle.

Tour 2: Newcastle Institute for Energy and Resources (NIER) and Hunter Valley Vineyards

Tour of various NIER facilities spanning Iron and Coke making, MCI, Green Hydrogen Research, Beneficiation, and Printed Solar Technologies.

Tour Capacity = 30 people

Tour Program:

  • 8:30am: Depart Newcastle from the Crystalbrook Kingsley Hotel 
  • 9:00am: Arrive Newcastle Institute for Energy and Resources (NIER), University of Newcastle Callaghan
  • 9:00am – 11:30am Site and safety induction and tour of various facilities spanning Iron and Coke making, MCI, Green Hydrogen Research, Beneficiation, and Printed Solar Technologies
  • 11:30am: Depart NIER
  • 12:30pm: Arrive Hunter Valley
  • 12:20pm – 2:00pm: Lunch
  • 2:15pm: Wine Tasting 1
  • 3:30pm: Wine Tasting 2
  • 4:45pm: Depart Hunter Valley
  • 6:00pm: Arrive Crystalbrook Kingsley Newcastle.
