Over 150 leaders came together in Newcastle in March 2025 for the second International Conference on Sustainable Cokemaking and Ironmaking (ICSCI 2025).
Hosted by the BHP Centre for Sustainable Steelmaking Research (SSR) at the University of Newcastle, the conference was focussed on identifying future research opportunities, and understanding the challenges and opportunities the steel industry is facing as it transitions towards net-zero carbon.
The event hosted both academic and industry experts from over 18 countries, and topics explored included sustainable cokemaking and biomass utilsation; low-emission ironmaking and steelmaking; decarbonisation pathways; process integration and optimisation; and fundamental studies, kinetics of reduction, and gasification.
A huge thank you to our ICSCI 2025 sponsors – The University of Newcastle, the Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP), BHP, and HATCH, – who’s support enabled the delivery of such a comprehensive program of learning and networking opportunities.
